Brief profile of Dr. Amiya Kumar Sahu

Dr. Amiya Kumar Sahu ,is the founder of National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) (website www.nswai.com) established in 1996 in Mumbai. He holds a PhD degree from USA in Environmental Sciences and M.E in Solid Waste Management from IHE (Delft), Netherlands. After commencing his career as a Sr. Scientific Officer in Air Pollution Prevention Cell, Mumbai Municipal Corporation between 1976-1983 as In- charge of Air Surveillance Project in the city of Mumbai, he joined Associated Industrial Consultants, Mumbai as Project Engineer till 1985. Dr Sahu started his own enterprise as Chairman and Managing Director of Econ Pollution Control Private Ltd (website www.econ.in) in 1985. His consulting company rendered to various industries, institutions both Government and Multinationals in India and neighboring countries. He pioneered the project of Industrial- Toxic and Hazardous Waste in Thane Belapur Industries (which comprise of more than 3500 Chemical Industries) and to establish a Common Disposal of Toxic and Hazardous Waste in the region by joining hands with the Danish company Chemcontrol A/S. This project was supported by World Bank, Govt of India, Govt of Maharastra and Indusries Association in the belt.

Dr Sahu was working as Technical Team leader (World Bank) for the Sectoral Studies of Municipal Waste in Bangladesh. And was also consultant to Inter-agency (UNEP, IAEA, WHO) in air pollution projects. He was instrumental to draft MSW Rules, 2000 in India. Dr. Sahu’s wide-ranging expertise has resulted in his membership in various national and International committees and Boards. He was Former Chairman Environmental Sub-Committee CII (Confedration of Indian Industry) western region, Former Chairman Environmental Committee Bombay Chamber of Commerce, Member of International Solid Waste Association of India, Vienna and many more. Dr Sahu has also been associated with various research Institutes and Universities in India and abroad and has participated in various National and International Conferences on waste management. He even promotes introduction of the subject on solid waste in higher studies and research activities in India and believes in the principle of 3-E that is Ethics-Environment-Economics.
