MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT: COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION
Seminar on ‘Municipal Solid Waste Management: Collection and Transportation” was held on 07th October, 2006 organized by National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) in collaboration with Maharashtra, Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and P.G. Department of Family Resource Management, SNDT Women’s University at Juhu Campus, Mumbai.
The seminar aimed at spreading awareness on Collection and Transportation of Municipal Solid Waste and to highlight technical solutions available. It was attended by Municipal officers of SWM Cell of MCGM, concerned citizens of Mumbai, eminent scientists, engineers, manufacturers of SWM equipments, students of P.G. Home Science, PG Diploma in Environment and
Development, Institute of Science and the staff of various Institutes like Garware Institute, Nirmala Niketan College of Home Science etc.
The seminar began with the University song by students. Dr. Mrs. Archana Bhattnagar, (HOD FRM Dept. SNDT) welcomed the chief guests, dignitaries and all Participants.
The seminar was inaugurated by lighting of lamp by Dr. Dilip Boralkar (Member Secretary, MPCB), Shri.R.A.RajeevIAS (Additional Municipal Commissioner, MCGM), Dr. B K. Rajale (Assistant Municipal Commissioner, NMMC), Dr.Amiya Kumar Sahu,(President, NSWAI) and Dr.Bhattnagar.
Dr.Amiya .Kumar.Sahu gave Presidential Address. He spoke about NSWAI and various aspects of Solid Waste Management with the view to disseminate environmental awareness. He appreciated P.G. Department of Family Resource Management for their joint venture with NSWAI for last three years on different aspects of Solid Waste Management.
The key note address was given by Dr. Dilip Boralkar, Member Secretary, MPCB. He spoke about the importance of SWM in Environment and efficiency as well as economy of SWM in regional places.
Dr. B K. Rajale, gave information about SWM practices in Navi Mumbai since its conception till date.
Shri .R.A.Rajeev IAS delivered a speech on Megacity Solid Waste Management issues focusing on laws and byelaws in SWM and challenges faced by MCGM.
The 6th issue of NSWAI- ENVIS newsletter was released on this event by Dr. Dilip Boralkar, and Shri. R A. Rajeev.
Session II started with the speech of Mr.K.Parikh, Dy. Chief Engineer from SWM cell of MCGM. He gave a presentation on Legal aspects and Academics of SWM and Biomedical Waste Disposal and Cleanliness of Mumbai and Sanitation laws. Dr.Rakesh Kumar, Dy. Director of NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) gave a presentation on Factors of Collection and Transportation of Solid Waste Management followed by Advanced Composting Methods by Dr. Mrs.K.U.Pai, Director, Earthcrop Biofertilizers.
Mr. Prem Agarwal of Brijwasi Biotech Pvt. Ltd. suggested new strategies which can be adopted by BMC so as to make our city cleaner and greener. The last speech was given by Mr.Ashok Nam from Orchid Ecotel Hotel who gave a presentation on Vermiculture and Nirmalya project 2006. 
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Mrs. B. Dasgupta. She thanked the dignitaries for sparing their valuable time all the guests, participants and organizers for the success of the conference. It ended with the National Anthem by students.
