Objectives Of NSWAI-Envis

Creation of website on Urban Municipal Waste Management with regional language interface
A website at the address www.nswai.com has been created and is being developed and expanded to include all the objectives of ENVIS regarding UMWM.The regional language interface will be created when significant volume of data is available.

Monthly compilation of news items on Urban Municipal Waste Management

Identification of information/data gaps in the specified subject areas and action taken to fill the gaps.
This activity will shape up after significant data is collected. These gaps will be identified after getting a good volume of data from diverse and various sources.

Database creation on Urban Municipal Waste Management to be put on website.

Initial data collected on UMWM is uploaded on the website. Sources of waste generation, waste generation rates, quantities of waste generated in cities of India with population above 1Lakh and above 50,000 are given.

The data collection survey includes personal visits to the various municipal bodies, local self-government institutes and libraries. One of the CWG members, Dr.Sahu has visited various cities of the states of Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal and distributed the questionnaire for the collection of data.CWG is also supervising the collection of data from local municipal bodies by the group of students.

Type of data attempted to collect is as follows:

Name of the city and the governing municipal body,population,solid waste generation rate, road lengths, number of staff, type of waste containers, frequency of sweepings, vehicles for collection and transport,storage,segregation,types of sources of wastes, processing and disposal etc.

Contribution of Newsletter on monthly basis

To establish and operate a distributed clearinghouse to answer and channel queries relocated to all allocated subject.

This will be done as and when our linkages take full shape and we identify groups, laboratories, government departments, municipal bodies who can be part of the information exchangers.

To establish linkages with information users, carriers and providers from among government, academia, business and non-governmental organizations including that with ENVIS.

The organizations intended to be linked with are:

· Academia like IITs,IISc,UDCT,Universities,Technical Boards-
  Research Institutes like Barc, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
