The much-hyped solid waste management plant (SWMP) project is far from reality as the government is yet to find a new site to shift the existing Bhagatanwala dump.

The row over the dump has been going on since long as it is located in residential area and adjoining a grain market, causing health hazards. Residents of nearby localities have staged a permanent dharna at Kot Mangal Singh Chowk demanding the dump to be shifted out of the city.

The solid waste management project (SWMP) was launched by the then deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The then SAD MLA Inderbir Singh Bolaria who is now Congress MLA from Amritsar (south), also raised voice in support of residents’ cause and had assured to shift the dump before assembly elections. The locals had a ray of hope when the local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu announced to shift the dump site around two and a half months ago but no nothing happened so far.  As per sources, the administration is looking for the site in Beas area which is around 35 km from the city.

Municipal corporation commissioner Gurloveleen Singh Sidhu said, “We wrote to the administration to find new site but did not get any reply.” Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora said that is unaware of any new developments in this direction.

However, finding a new site will be a challenge for the government as locals are likely to protests from their respective areas against setting up of the plant.

“We are worried as there is no progress. We are forced to live in hell like condition especially in rainy season when the danger of diseases increases”, said vice president Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee Sandeep Khurl. He said, “We trust Sidhu. But the state government is giving priority to other issues.

“Till the dump is shifted, the city garbage should be dumped to other sites.Situation has deteriorated as garbage of entire city is dumped here”, said Nawal Chawla, general secretary of the committee.
